Accessibility

Last updated 20 August 2026.

This site is meant to be usable by everyone, including people who do not use a mouse, who use a screen reader, or who need larger text. This page records what has been done and what is still imperfect, because a statement that claims everything is fine is rarely true.

What has been done

  • Every colour pairing on the site is chosen by a contrast rule rather than by eye, so captions on a coloured ground are always either near-black or white, whichever reads.
  • The menu can be opened and used entirely from the keyboard. While it is open, focus stays inside it, and Escape closes it and returns focus to the button that opened it.
  • There is a skip link to the main content as the first thing a keyboard reaches.
  • Keyboard focus is always visible.
  • The theme toggle reports its state to assistive technology.
  • If your system asks for reduced motion, every animation on the site stops, including the moving hero name, which is pinned to a readable state instead.
  • Background video is decorative and hidden from screen readers.
  • Typefaces are served from this site, so text renders even when outside services are blocked.

Where it falls short

  • Embedded YouTube and Vimeo players bring their own interface, which is outside this site’s control.
  • Older posts may contain images whose alternative text is thinner than it should be. These are being improved as they are revisited.
  • The hero name animates continuously unless reduced motion is requested. If you find it distracting and your system has no such setting, please say so.

Standard aimed at

WCAG 2.2 at level AA. Most of it is met; the shortfalls above are the known exceptions.

Telling me about a problem

If something here is hard to use, email the address in the footer, describe what happened and what you were using, and it will be looked at. Accessibility reports are treated as bug reports, not as feedback.
